By the turn of the 20th Century, majestic estates dotted the hill, as the worth of the breathtaking view became obvious. Nevertheless, by 1917 the possibility of striking oil on the hilltop went beyond the value of the view and the Union Oil Company drilled the very first oil well in the location.
Additional expedition was suspended till the Royal Dutch Shell Oil Business resumed expedition and struck pay dirt on June 23, 1921. That first "gusher," at Alamitos Well Number 1, marked a turning point in Signal Hill's history and put the city on the map. Eventually one of the wealthiest oil fields on the planet, it produced over 1 billion barrels of oil by 1984.
